Vending machine locations in Hawaii: what the record shows

Every venue in this dataset is reachable by road from another. Hawaii is the one state where that is false, and no figure in the record accounts for it.

Hawaii returns a zero, like twenty other states. What separates it is not the absence but the reason and the geography: it is one of only two states a locator has excluded by name, and the only one where the dataset’s unspoken assumption — that venues connect by road — simply fails.

Figures below come from the 87 signed listings open on PinPoint Vending’s marketplace on October 5, 2026, plus that company’s published coverage statement. Traffic in the record is venue-reported and unaudited; no listing reports sales.

What kind of zero is Hawaii’s?

A documented one, which is rare. Of the 21 states with no signed placement, nineteen have no published explanation attached — the locator may not have reached them, may have found nothing, or may simply not have tried. Hawaii and Alaska are the exceptions: the company states its coverage as every state except those two.

That makes Hawaii’s absence uninformative about Hawaii. It tells you a business decision was taken, not that venues declined or that machines fail here. The same is true of Alaska, and of nowhere else in the dataset.

It also means Hawaii will not appear in this record at all unless that decision changes, however the local market develops. An empty row that cannot fill is different from one that has not filled, and vending machine locations by state marks the distinction across the table.

The assumption the dataset never states

Every one of the 87 signed placements sits somewhere a van can reach from another placement. That is so obviously true across the mainland that no figure in this record acknowledges it — and it is the assumption Hawaii breaks.

What the record implicitly assumesWhat Hawaii does
Venues connect by road, so a route is a driveFour populated islands with no road between them
Stock and machines arrive by truckBoth arrive by sea or air
Sales tax is added to the customer’s priceGeneral excise tax comes off the operator’s gross receipts
A service visit costs fuel and an hourA neighbour-island visit costs a flight and a day

None of those appear as columns anywhere, so none of them are priced into any median this dataset produces. An operator applying the national figures to Hawaii is not adjusting a model for a harder market; they are using a model built on four premises that do not hold.

What would a Hawaii venue be paid, on national figures?

An estimate, and a weaker one than elsewhere for the reasons above.

Reference figureNational record
Median venue share40% of net
Range30% to 50%
Pass-through venues50% of net
Destination venues40%, sometimes 30%
Minimum term16 months, every listing
Operator keeps per $8 sale at 40%$3.72

Treating the $1.80 cost of goods in the agreements as the operator’s whole cost per sale, before card fees.

That last line is where the estimate breaks hardest. The $1.80 figure is a mainland cost of goods; freight to the islands sits on top of it, and the general excise tax comes off the sale rather than being added to the price. Both push the operator’s real retained figure below $3.72, which in turn affects what share an operator can offer a venue.

Which venue types would Hawaii supply?

The four that carry the record exist on Oahu, and thin out sharply beyond it.

Venue typeNational placementsMedian visitors a dayVisitor-hours a day
Family entertainment centre11178445
Trampoline park7274411
Bowling alley18137370
Indoor playground15110164

Those last two columns convert a headcount into hours of exposure, which is what a machine sells into, following the method in our ranking of vending locations.

Honolulu and its suburbs hold examples of all four, and how much foot traffic a vending machine needs sets the thresholds each would have to clear. Maui, Hawaii Island and Kauai hold fewer of each, and the relevant consequence is operational rather than commercial: a route spanning two islands cannot be serviced on one trip at any price the national figures contemplate. In practice Hawaii is one viable single-island market with three smaller ones beside it.

What would change Hawaii’s position?

A locator revising its coverage, or a local operator placing machines without one. The first would put Hawaii in this dataset; the second would not, because the record only captures placements arranged through the locator whose marketplace it is.

That is worth stating plainly, because it is the limit of what any of this can tell you. Hawaii certainly has vending machines. What it has none of is a documented placement in a dataset that, by its own publisher’s statement, excludes the state — and no amount of reading will turn that absence into information about the Hawaiian market.

Frequently asked questions

How many vending machine placements does Hawaii have on the record?

None. Hawaii is one of 21 states with no signed placement in the marketplace listings collected on October 5, 2026, and one of only two — with Alaska — that the specialty locator has publicly excluded from its coverage.

Why is Hawaii excluded rather than just unplaced?

The locator states its coverage as every state except Alaska and Hawaii. That makes the absence a published business decision rather than an unexplained gap, which is true of only those two states in the dataset.

Can the national figures be applied to Hawaii?

Only with large caveats. Every venue in the record is reachable by road from another, and all of them operate under sales tax rather than a gross-receipts tax. Both assumptions fail in Hawaii.

Does Hawaii have the venue types that sign elsewhere?

On Oahu, yes — bowling alleys, indoor playgrounds, family entertainment centres and trampoline parks all exist around Honolulu. The neighbour islands have fewer of each and no road connection between them.

What would a Hawaii venue be paid?

Only a national estimate applies: a median of 40% of net across 81 signed placements, with pass-through venues at 50% and destination venues at 40% or 30%. Nothing in the data is specific to Hawaii.

Next step

Do not transplant the national medians to an island venue without rebuilding the cost side first: freight on machine and stock, the general excise tax coming off gross receipts, and a service trip that may be a flight. Those four assumptions sit silently under every figure in this record, and Hawaii is the one state where all four fail at once.
