# Vending machines at swim schools and dance studios: the enrollment math

> Lesson venues see the same families every week, half an hour at a time. The number that decides a machine is filled lesson slots, not enrollment.

Below about 300 filled lesson slots a week, a swim school has less traffic than three in four signed venues reporting a count. At 500 slots, or 50,000 family visits a year, it matches their median. Lessons run 30 to 45 minutes, the waiting parent is the buyer, and the machine belongs in the lobby, not the pool hall.

**By the numbers**

| Measure | Swim schools and dance studios |
|---|---|
| Visitors a year | No public counts. Estimate it: filled lesson slots a week × 50 weeks × 2 people (child plus adult). 300 slots ≈ 30,000 visits; 500 ≈ 50,000 |
| Typical visit length | Group swim lessons of 30 minutes (Goldfish Swim School) to 45 minutes (Texas Tech, UIC); about 45 minutes on site for a 30-minute lesson (Dwell Time estimate); 1-hour dance classes at one university-run academy (West Texas A&M) |
| Peak times | Weekday after-school hours and weekends; in term time, school-age lessons run outside school hours |
| Who signs | The owner, or the franchisee at a franchised school, within franchise rules and alongside any in-house pro shop |
| Venue share | No listings of this type. Median 40% of net sales across the 81 listings that set a share in one vending location marketplace |
| Machine fit | Compact drink or combo machine with a card reader, in the dry lobby |

## How many lesson slots does a swim school need for a vending machine?

Below about 300 filled lesson slots a week, a swim school sits in the bottom quarter of signed vending venues by traffic; at about 500 slots it matches their median. The conversion is simple: each slot is one swimmer plus, for young children, one waiting adult, repeated across about 50 lesson weeks a year. Count slots, not students, because a child who swims twice a week fills two.

The comparison set is the 69 marketplace listings that disclose a venue-reported visitor count on October 5, 2026. In that sample the median is 50,000 visitors a year and the middle half sits between 32,000 and 100,000; 52 of the 69 report more than 30,000. Converted with the assumptions below, a swim school lands here:

| Filled lesson slots a week | Swimmer visits a year | Swimmer + adult visits a year | People per open day |
|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| 150 | 7,500 | 15,000 | 50 |
| 300 | 15,000 | 30,000 | 100 |
| 500 | 25,000 | 50,000 | 167 |
| 800 | 40,000 | 80,000 | 267 |
| 1,200 | 60,000 | 120,000 | 400 |

The assumptions are stated so you can swap in your own. The table uses 50 lesson weeks a year, because [Goldfish Swim School](https://goldfishswimschool.com/faqs/) says many families choose weekly, year-round lessons; one adult per swimmer; and 300 open days, or six days a week. The table is an illustration, not a forecast, and it leaves out siblings, who add buyers.

The table also shows what a fee hurdle looks like at each size. At $8 a sale, $1.80 cost of goods and a 40% venue share, the operator keeps $3.72 a sale, treating the agreements' $1.80 as its whole cost per sale and leaving out card fees. Covering a $100 monthly placement fee then takes 27 sales a month: 1 in 93 visits at a 300-slot school and 1 in 248 at 800 slots (also an illustration, not a forecast).

The fee is only one cost: the machine, card fees and restocking trips also come out of the operator's $3.72 a sale. Our view: below roughly 300 slots, pitch a compact drink machine or walk away, because fewer buyers have to carry the same restocking trips. At 500 slots and up, a combo machine has room to work.

## How long do families stay at a swim lesson or dance class?

A swim lesson keeps a family on site for about 45 minutes by our estimate. Goldfish Swim School's group lessons run 30 minutes, and its locations provide private family dressing huts and hair dryers, so drying off happens on site. Dance classes run longer, 1 hour each at [West Texas A&M University's recreational Dance Academy](https://www.wtamu.edu/_files/docs/academics/college-fine-arts-humanities/Dance%20Program/2023-2024%20NEW%20Dance%20Academy%20Schedule.docx), but older dancers can be dropped off.

| Session | Length | Who waits | Time on site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group swim lesson | 30 minutes (Goldfish) | The parent of each young swimmer | About 45 minutes (estimate) |
| Youth group lesson, university program | 45 minutes ([Texas Tech](https://www.depts.ttu.edu/recreation/aquatics/Swimminglessons.php) Levels 1–4; [UIC](https://recreation.uic.edu/programs/group-lessons/learn-to-swim-aquatics)) | Parents; UIC lets them sit in the aquatics area | About 1 hour (estimate) |
| Swim team practice | 60 minutes (Goldfish Swim Force) | Some parents | 60–75 minutes (estimate) |
| Infant swim class | Parent is in the pool (Goldfish) | Nobody; the adult is in the water | Short stop after class |
| School-age dance class | 1 hour (West Texas A&M, 2023–24 schedule) | Parents who stay; many drop off | Up to an hour, or none |

The rhythm matters more than the minutes. A 30-minute lesson turns the waiting area over twice an hour, so a busy evening walks more separate parents past the machine than an hour-long class does. Dance studios make up for it with lobbies built for watching: [Kids 'N Dance](https://kidsndance.com/dance/faqs/) in Oakland, for one, puts flat-screen TVs in its lobbies so parents can follow class without disrupting it.

## Where should a vending machine go in a swim school?

A swim school's vending machine belongs in the dry lobby or a viewing room sealed off from the pool hall, never on the deck. The [Seresco natatorium design guide](https://serescodehumidifiers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Seresco-Natatorium-Design-Guide.pdf) lists kids' swim school air at 86–92°F and water at 88–92°F, recommends 50–60% relative humidity, and warns that condensation in chloramine-laden pool air becomes corrosive. Goldfish Swim School says its pools are heated to 90°F, inside the guide's water range.

The same guide calls it best practice to keep electrical components in a separate mechanical vestibule, out of the pool air stream. A vending machine is also a box of electrical parts: compressor, fans, bill validator and card reader. Put it where you would put an electrical panel, on the lobby side of the door parents walk through after the lesson. Where parents sit poolside, as UIC Campus Recreation allows during its lessons, the machine goes outside the pool hall's entrance.

The heat that rules out the deck also sells the drinks. Parents who have sat for half an hour in 86–92°F air are likely to leave thirsty, and a machine on their exit path catches them then. On the walk-through, check for a dedicated outlet within cord reach and a dry floor away from the shower and changing-room exits. Our [guide to placing a machine inside a venue](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machine-placement-inside-venue/) covers sightlines and exit paths in more detail.

## What snacks and drinks suit swimmers, dancers and waiting parents?

Cold drinks should fill most of the slots in a swim school machine, because the buyer is a parent leaving warm pool air; small single-serve snacks for children come second. Dance studios shift the mix toward the dancers themselves, who may take back-to-back classes and need water between them. In both venues the same families see the machine every week, so a short, rotated menu beats a wide, static one.

- Water and electrolyte drinks in the largest share of slots.
- Juice boxes or small milks for younger children, if the machine is refrigerated.
- Single-serve snacks sized for a child before dinner, rather than full-size candy bars.
- Nut-free choices where the school or studio has a nut policy; ask before you stock.
- A card reader and contactless payment, so a parent holding a towel and a toddler can pay with a phone.

Leave out anything hot, anything in glass near a pool, and anything the front desk already sells. One calendar warning for dance: a studio on a school-year season loses its summer weeks. West Texas A&M's academy ran from August 25, 2025, to May 9, 2026, about 29 class weeks once its Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks come out, according to its [2025–26 calendar](https://www.wtamu.edu/_files/docs/academics/college-fine-arts-humanities/Dance%20Program/2025%202026%20WT%20Dance%20Academy%20Important%20Dates%20Document%203.pdf). At 29 weeks, a 300-slot studio produces about 17,400 visits a year, not 30,000, so rerun the math with the studio's real calendar.

## How do swim schools and dance studios compare with other kids' activity venues?

No swim school or dance studio is among the 87 open marketplace listings on October 5, 2026, so the nearest comparisons are other children's activity venues. Two gymnastics gyms report 1,000 and 45,000 visitors a year, a kids' center in Jamaica, New York reports 15,000, and the 11 indoor playgrounds that disclose a count have a median of 40,000. All are venue-reported figures.

| Venue type | Listings | With a visitor count | Visitors a year (venue-reported) | Venue share |
|---|---:|---:|---|---|
| Gymnastics gym | 2 | 2 | 1,000 and 45,000 | 40% in both |
| Kids' center | 1 | 1 | 15,000 | 40% |
| Indoor playground | 15 | 11 | Median 40,000 (range 7,000–150,000) | 40% in 12 of 13 that set one; 30% in 1 |
| All listings | 87 | 69 | Median 50,000 (middle half 32,000–100,000) | Median 40% (n = 81) |

All three of those children's activity listings, the two gymnastics gyms and the kids' center, set 40% of net sales, the most common share in the marketplace (55 of 81 listings). Net is what remains after a per-unit product cost that the host agreement fixes in advance, $1.80 on the cotton candy listings; our [revenue share data study](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-location-data-revenue-share/) breaks shares down by venue type. Indoor playgrounds, the closest children's venue with enough counted listings to rank, place fourth in our [best vending machine locations](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/best-vending-machine-locations/) ranking, at 164 visitor-hours a day.

Treat any lesson venue's visitor figure with care. A count of 1,000 visitors a year is under 3 a day, and the listing does not say whether it counts visits or enrolled athletes, so ask which one a number is before you rely on it. The [gymnastics gym file](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machine-gymnastics-gym/) covers the lesson venue that does appear in the listings.

## Who decides at a swim school or dance studio, and what should you ask?

The owner decides at an independent swim school or dance studio. At a franchised one, the franchisee decides within whatever the franchise agreement says about outside vendors. Expect retail overlap: Goldfish Swim School locations run a Treasure Island Pro Shop for forgotten items, so a machine there has to sell what the shop does not.

Questions to settle before you write a proposal:

1. How many lesson or class slots are filled each week, by day? Slots fill the lobby; an enrollment total does not say how often each student comes.
2. How many weeks a year do lessons run, and are there summer or recital breaks?
3. Where do parents wait, and is that space inside or outside the pool air?
4. Is there a dedicated outlet within cord reach of the waiting area?
5. Does the franchise agreement or an in-house shop limit what a machine can sell?
6. Are there food rules, such as nut-free or no food past the lobby?

Public and nonprofit pools compete for the same families and decide differently. The [YMCA of the USA](https://www.ymca.org/sites/default/files/2025-10/About-the-Y-Fact-Sheet-2025.pdf) says 929,000 children learn swim skills at a Y each year. The [2026 NRPA Agency Performance Review](https://www.nrpa.org/globalassets/research/research-reports/2026-agency-performance-review.pdf) finds 69% of park and recreation agencies offer aquatics programs. Those pools sign through an association or a city, which our [YMCA and rec center file](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machine-ymca-rec-center/) covers; for how lesson venues rank against rinks, gyms and courts, see the [sports facilities guide](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machines-sports-facilities/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you put a vending machine in a dance studio?

Yes, if enough parents wait on site. A studio whose older students are dropped off has little traffic for a machine, while one with preschool classes and a lobby where parents watch can support a compact drink or snack machine. Count filled class slots per week before you decide.

### What sells in a swim school vending machine?

Cold drinks come first, because parents wait in pool air that kids' swim schools keep at 86–92°F. Small single-serve snacks for children leaving after-school lessons come second, and a card reader matters more than a wide selection.

### How long are kids' swim lessons?

Goldfish Swim School's standard group lessons run 30 minutes, and its Swim Force team practices run 60. University-run programs at Texas Tech and UIC hold 45-minute youth group lessons. With changing time before and after a 30-minute lesson, a family is on site for roughly 45 minutes by our estimate.

### Do swim schools take a cut of vending sales?

Expect to offer one, and agree whether it is a share of gross or net sales. In the signed-venue listings Dwell Time tracks, the most common venue share is 40% of net sales, but none of those venues is a swim school, so treat 40% as a starting point, not a rate.

## Next step

Ask the owner for one typical week of filled lesson slots. Multiply by the weeks lessons run, about 50 at a year-round swim school and nearer 30 at a school-year studio, then by two people per slot, and compare the result with the 30,000-visit line above. Finally, confirm a dedicated outlet outside the pool air. If the numbers clear and you would rather not scout and sign venues yourself, [PinPoint Vending](https://pinpoint-vending.com/vending-locator-service) finds venues, signs the host agreement and licenses the space to operators.
