# A vending machine at an ice rink: the math on 400,000 visitors a year

> The largest venue in the marketplace is a Pennsylvania ice rink; its visitor count is the easy part, while the hockey schedule and the machine's spot are harder.

An ice rink reporting 400,000 visitors a year, about 1,096 a day, tops the 69 counted listings in one vending marketplace, and a machine there needs about 1 sale per 620 visitors to cover its $200 monthly fee at an assumed $8 price. The harder questions are when the rink is busy and where the machine stands.

**By the numbers**

## How much traffic does a 400,000-visitor ice rink bring?

A 400,000-visitor ice rink brings about 7,700 people a week, or 1,096 a day if it opens every day of the year. The Export, Pennsylvania rink is the largest venue among the 69 marketplace listings that report a visitor count, 8 times the marketplace median of 50,000. Its count is venue-reported, so it is the first number to verify.

Ask what the count includes: skaters only, or also parents, spectators and tournament crowds; ticket scans, league rosters or an estimate. No public benchmark ties rink attendance to the number of ice sheets, so the check has to come from the rink's own records, ideally a month of admissions and ice bookings.

Pricing in the marketplace follows traffic. The Export rink is the largest of 22 Premium listings, priced at $2,000 to enroll and $200 a month, and every one of them reports 100,000 or more visitors a year. The 47 Standard listings at $1,000 that give a count top out at 85,000.

Scale is the rink's advantage. Every 1% of daily visitors who buy is about 11 sales a day, and the venue's 40% share is the same one a 1,000-visitor gymnastics gym asks, so the extra traffic is the operator's to capture. On 60-minute ice blocks, the count computes to 1,096 visitor-hours a day, more than any ranked type in our [best vending machine locations](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/best-vending-machine-locations/) ranking, though one rink is a case, not a type.

Rinks are thinly covered in the signed data, which cuts both ways. [PinPoint Vending's ranking of venues for a specialty machine](https://pinpoint-vending.com/blog/best-places-cotton-candy-vending-machine) places ice and roller rinks seventh of nine on a sample of just 2 venues reporting 35,000 to 400,000 visitors, both at a 40% share, and calls the category underrated on that evidence. Two listings cannot settle it, but it does mean a rink offer is unlikely to be priced off a thick comparison set.

## How does a youth hockey schedule shape sales at an ice rink?

A youth hockey schedule turns an ice rink's traffic into hourly waves. [USA Hockey's practice plan for 6U players](https://portal.usahockey.com/cx/hockey-development-coordinator/coaching-development/basic_structure_for_ltp-6u.pdf) is designed around an hour of ice, a block size it calls common across the country, trimmed to 50 minutes of skating where the hour includes a 10-minute resurface. Each block brings one group of families in and sends another out.

The waves are large because the base is large. USA Hockey counted 586,002 registered players in 2025–26, per its [membership statistics](https://www.usahockey.com/membershipstats). Its [2025–26 registration report](https://cdn1.sportngin.com/attachments/document/37cb-3602061/2025-26_Season_Annual_Meeting_Registration_Report.pdf), with counts as of April 30, 2026, shows that total up 1.41% on the season before and puts 402,886 of the players in youth hockey. Learn-to-play programs add shorter blocks: the City of Boise's Idaho IceWorld runs 30-minute and 60-minute hockey classes in 6- to 8-week sessions, according to its 2021–22 [hockey parent guide](https://idahoiceworld.cityofboise.org/media/1270/hockey-parent-guide-2021_web.pdf). Swim schools also run 30-minute lessons; the [swim school and dance studio file](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machine-swim-school-dance-studio/) covers that rhythm.

For a machine, the useful number is how many blocks run while parents are in the building, not the annual total. Ask the rink for a typical week's ice schedule and count the youth blocks on weekday evenings and weekends; each one is a batch of adults with an hour to fill.

## What sells at an ice rink snack bar or vending machine?

Hot drinks and replacement gear are the 2 categories an ice rink adds to the usual vending mix, and the Penn Ice Rink at the University of Pennsylvania shows both. Its [vending area](https://icerink.business-services.upenn.edu/plan-your-visit/food-and-drinks) pairs hot chocolate, tea and coffee with frozen meals, microwaves, candy and chips, and an [ice-adjacent machine](https://icerink.business-services.upenn.edu/plan-your-visit/pro-shop) sells sticks, laces, tape and mouthguards by card.

The rink's [about page](https://icerink.business-services.upenn.edu/about-penn-ice-rink) calls that gear machine a self-serve pro shop for hockey players and figure skaters, placed feet from the ice. Families are told to carry the same consumables: the Boise guide's equipment checklist includes 2 rolls of tape, a spare pair of laces and a water bottle, and mouthguards are required from Squirt-level league games up.

Our view: at a busy rink, the second machine should sell tape and laces, not soda. The Export listing signed for cotton candy, which suits public sessions and birthday parties more than practice blocks, and the rink's schedule will show how much of each week is which.

## Where should a vending machine go in an ice rink: lobby or bleachers?

The lobby is the stronger spot for a vending machine in an ice arena. Every skater, parent and spectator crosses it at the start and end of each ice block, and it is warm enough to linger in. Bleachers hold an audience that came to watch: a parent seated for a 60-minute practice is facing the ice, not walking past a machine.

Wherever it stands, the [2010 ADA Standards](https://www.ada.gov/law-and-regs/design-standards/2010-stds/) say that when a facility provides vending machines, at least one of each type needs its controls between 15 and 48 inches above the floor. Those controls must work with one hand and at most 5 pounds of force, and the machine needs a clear 30-by-48-inch floor space where a wheelchair user can pull up to it. General information, not legal advice; checked October 5, 2026.

Two rink-specific checks follow. Keep the machine's clear space out of the route skaters walk in their blades, and confirm the outlet and floor stay dry. Our [vending machine placement rules](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machine-placement-inside-venue/) cover sightlines and power runs.

## What does the Export, Pennsylvania listing cost and pay?

The Export, Pennsylvania listing costs a $2,000 enrollment fee, of which $1,600 is a refundable deposit, plus a $200 monthly placement fee over a 16-month minimum term, and pays the venue 40% of net sales. At an assumed $8 price and the agreement's $1.80 cost of goods per unit, covering the monthly fee takes about 54 sales, or 1 in 620 visitors.

| Item | Figure |
|---|---:|
| Enrollment fee | $2,000 |
| Refundable part of the enrollment fee | $1,600 |
| Monthly placement fee | $200 |
| Monthly fees over the 16-month minimum | $3,200 |
| Venue share of net sales | 40% |
| Cost of goods fixed in the agreement | $1.80 per unit |
| Venue's cut of an assumed $8 sale | $2.48 |
| Operator's cut before other costs | $3.72 |
| Sales a month to cover the $200 fee | 54 |

Under the marketplace's published terms, the deposit comes back after 16 months of monthly fees, or if the placement ends through no fault of the operator, and the other $400 of the enrollment fee is a processing fee. The operator's $3.72 takes the agreement's $1.80 to be the whole per-sale cost and is figured before card fees, so card processing, sales tax, the machine and restocking trips still come out of it. The sale rows are an illustration, not a forecast.

The listing's Pennsylvania notes: a sales tax license from the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, no separate vending license or decal, and the operator's name and address shown on each machine. General information, not legal advice; checked October 5, 2026.

Pennsylvania has 3 listings in the snapshot: this rink and 2 bowling alleys, in Greensburg (50,000 visitors, 40%) and Pittsburgh (100,000 visitors, 30%). The rink reports 4 times the traffic of the larger alley at a higher share. The listing also counts 3 other signed venues within 60 miles: those 2 alleys, under 10 miles and about 20 miles away, and a bowling alley in Toronto, Ohio, about 55 miles away. An operator who takes more than one can restock them on a single route, which an isolated listing does not allow.

## Who signs at an ice rink, and what changes at a city-owned one?

A privately run ice rink's owner or general manager signs the host agreement; at the Export rink, the venue signed on August 21, 2026. A rink owned by a city or a school may instead put vending out to bid. The [Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks](https://recreation.parks.lacity.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/concession/rfp_pdf/Vending%20Machine%20RFP.pdf) did so for 43 of its facilities in 2024, writing a commission on gross receipts and product rules into the contract.

Ask early which kind of rink it is. Los Angeles asked bidders for no less than 20% of gross receipts and reserved a fifth of each machine's items for healthier choices, terms a private rink would negotiate case by case. The [YMCA and rec center file](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machine-ymca-rec-center/) walks through how a public bid works.

In the [vending machines for sports facilities ranking](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machines-sports-facilities/), ice rinks come 2nd of 9, behind gymnastics gyms. The [roller rink file](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machine-roller-rink/) covers a rink type where the snack bar, not the schedule, drives the pitch, and the [indoor soccer file](https://vendingmachineslocations.com/vending-machine-indoor-soccer/) covers the turf and court facilities that can share a complex with a rink.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do ice rinks have vending machines?

Some do, and the rinks that publish their menus show what a rink machine sells. The Penn Ice Rink in Philadelphia runs a vending area with hot chocolate, coffee, frozen meals and microwaves, plus a machine beside the ice that sells hockey tape, laces and mouthguards.

### What sells at an ice rink concession stand?

No public data ranks rink concession sales. The Penn Ice Rink's vending menu leans on hot chocolate, tea, coffee and microwave meals, and hockey families need tape and spare laces, which the City of Boise's hockey parent guide tells them to bring.

### Where should a vending machine go in an ice arena?

In the lobby or a warm viewing area, on the path between the entrance, the dressing rooms and the rental counter. Parents in the bleachers are watching the ice, while a lobby machine sits on the route everyone takes each time an hour-long ice block turns over.

### How many visitors does an ice rink get?

It depends on the number of sheets and programs, and no national average is published. The Export, Pennsylvania rink reports 400,000 visitors a year, the most of any marketplace listing with a count, but the figure is venue-reported and unaudited.

## Next step

Ask the rink for a typical week's ice schedule and a month of attendance records, then count the youth blocks when parents wait. If the reported count holds up, 1 sale in 620 visitors covers the fee; if the rink's own records show half the traffic, the hurdle doubles to 1 in 310. The full terms, venue share and fees are on [PinPoint Vending's listing for the Export, Pennsylvania rink](https://pinpoint-vending.com/marketplace/ice-rink-export-pa-l03279).
